On Saturday, the English teachers here held their own version of the Olympics for their students. Some of the events included a fruit toss (pictured above), a coin toss, and rock-paper-scissors. About 50 students came and had a great time. Those that won the events received candies and other prizes.
Perhaps the best part of the […]

Just in case things weren’t busy enough after getting back on Tuesday after our furlough, this past weekend we packed our bags once again to go to our annual summer Bible camp. We spent the weekend at a hotel in Utsunomiya with our Japanese church members. We enjoyed time to worship and study together. We […]

“I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.” - John 4:35
It’s not called a “mission field” for nothing. The Bible often draws upon the analogy of the work of God’s kingdom here on earth as being like a farm field, one that is ripe for the harvest. The spiritual […]

We’ve been watching the Olympics from our living room in Torreón, and thus have had a taste of the Beijing Summer Games from the Mexican media viewpoint. Last night the big highlights here were men’s diving and the men’s triathlon. Mexico had a participant in each, and the announcers cheered them on heartily. Unfortunately, neither […]

Three teeth! A severe problem in America. A near tragedy in Nigeria, where health insurance and dental care are very rare.
Rev. Mathias Odey, President of All Saints Lutheran Church of Nigeria, wrote in an August 14 email, “Pastor Ento fell on a motor bike and loss three of teeth, though he has improved markly.” This […]

We spent a few days in Mexico City last month. While there, we revisited many of our favorite hangouts from the years we lived in the huge metropolis (2000-2004). This time, however, we carried a backpack full of diapers, wipes and bottles…and realized how life has changed ;).
Flashback: I first arrived in Mexico City on […]

During the second week of our visit, we traveled to Malawi for our final days in Africa. Once again, our time there was both memorable and productive. Zambian Pastor Mweete delivered us to the border and Missionary Steve Lawrenz picked us up.
We began to learn about many interesting aspects of Malawian mission work. There are […]

Steve arrived last summer, and is now headed back to Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary to finish his studies. To wish him well, our congregation held a party at a local quinta (sort of like a private park, Mexican style). The place had a small pool, trampoline, […]
