This past week we had thousands of flying visitors in our front yard. There were so many that it concerned me. I whispered to the kids to go into the house quickly & quietly. The kids and I had been outside setting out plates and bowls for a picnic lunch when we heard a loud […]

In the States the month of May means spring time, rain, flowers and graduations. Soon the caps & gowns will commence and summer vacation is around the corner. While many get their diplomas in America, here in Malawi, Africa we are donning our stocking caps and unpacking the down.
Our rainy season has passed and the […]

Beautiful Saviour, Blantyre, Malawi, has a rare privilege. We have brothers and sisters in the faith from various African countries. Our English worship is the common language that brings us together. In this multi-language African city we feel the curse of Babel. So often there is confusion of tongues, and from that comes misunderstanding and […]

WELS largest mission field is Africa, where it is working in partnership with five independent national synods that are currently ministering to about 64,000 souls with God’s Word.
In Zambia, in the south-central region of the continent, WELS missionaries have been operating since the early 1950s. 7 expatriate missionaries and 19 national pastors serve 32 established […]

Here is the picture, children with no shoes, ill fitting, thread bare clothes, eyes wide open, singing praise anthems and waving palm branches. Is this Jerusalem AD 33? No, this is Blantyre, Malawi, March 7, 2008. On Friday afternoons in Blantyre to Beautiful Saviour Lutheran Church children walk, some many kilometers, frequently soaked by rains, […]

Just ten minutes ago our member, Radweeky Bisiwasi Kaimaima left the church. He announced to me that his six year old nephew died. It’s not like a nephew in the U.S. This nephew was an orphan under Radweeky’s care, just as he is an orphan. The family had no money to buy a coffin for […]

With the Lord’s help and trusting in his direction, Beautiful Saviour, Blantyre, is making some rather significant plans. I believe the second half of 2008 will be marked with a significant event that will change the flow of the congregation.
The church is divided into five committees: Evangelism, Education and Stewardship, Worship, Youth, and Property.
Some of […]

Malawi means ‘flame’ in the national language of the land, Chichewa. Certainly the Spirit’s fire can be witnessed at work in the WELS’ largest foreign mission. Since our beginning in 1963, the Lutheran church has grown to over 30,000 members in 135 congregations served by 18 national pastors and aided by 7 missionaries. The good […]

In Mozambique, one of Africa’s most rapidly developing countries, two WELS missionaries will be starting evangelism projects and outreach in the city of Nampula. Nampula is a large and growing city in Northern Mozambique. The urban outreach efforts are likely to include radio ministry and a Christian Information Center. The hope is to quickly add […]
