Mosquito Net Woes

One of many changes I had to get used to when I moved to Malawi was sleeping under a mosquito net at night. At first, it seemed so confining, but the net has grown into a type of security blanket for me keeping out not only mosquitoes but also every other creepy crawly creature that might try to disrupt my sleep. Unfortunately, my net had seen better days and I decided after resorting to use a band-aid to patch the latest hole, it was time to replace my dear net. Like most good consumers, I was so excited about my new purchase that I wanted to use it right away. The package instructions said to hang the net outside in the shade for a full day before use, but it was already late afternoon, and I was anxious. So, I hung my net outside on our clothesline under the shade of a tree for a few hours and determined that it was good enough. After all, the packaging didn’t say what would happen if you didn’t follow the instructions, so I figured it couldn’t be too bad. (more…)

Free Clinics in Nepal

Free clinics are conducted in various areas of Far and Mid-Western Nepal about every two months with funds provided by the Humanitarian Aid Committee. These clincs serve as a bridge for the spead of the gospel. It should be noted that the Darchula District, where the free clinic was conducted, is in the extreme Northwestern area of Nepal in the Himalayan Mountains and the men, medical equipment and Christian literature could be transported to the region only by horseback. We do not have a congregation in this district but hope, through this effort, to establish one or more congregations in the area. The medical and dental equipment used during the free clinics were donated by the Wisconsin Lutheran High School student body. Christian literature used in this clinic, and throughout Nepal, is furnished by the Multi-Language Publications program. This literature includes THE PROMISE and many volumes of the Bible Teachings Series books translated into Nepali, the national language of the country. The Bible Teachings Series books are guided self-stugy books on many subjects.

My first trip out to one of our clinic sites during my first week in Malawi is an experience I will never forget. Our devotion began with a hymn out of the Chichewa hymnal, and I was brought close to tears. I couldn’t understand a word of it, but the sound of so many voices raised in unique harmony was one of the most beautiful sounds I had ever heard.

A family friend informed me that the Central Africa Medical Mission was looking for an administrator for the Lutheran Mobile Clinic in Malawi and thought that I might be interested. She put me in contact with the nurse recruiter who forwarded me the description of duties for the position. As I read through the list of duties, I realized that the skills I had learned while working at a grocery store had directly prepared me for the tasks of the medical mission. I have seen the Lord’s guiding hand in my life leading me to serve Him and others in new ways and ultimately bringing me here to Malawi.

After spending the last 16 years working in the public health sector, I became very aware of the missing component in health care delivery. We focus primarily on how to fix the problems, but within specific guidelines. As a Christian I found many opportunities to share my faith with people who were suffering and dying and found that in time of need we all look for something bigger to hold onto. I started looking into medical mission work and came across the Central Africa Medical Mission. Everything just started falling into place as I saw the hand of God showing just where he wanted me to be.

CAMM - Central Africa Medical Mission

The Central Africa Medical Mission is a 45-year legacy of healthcare in Zambia and Malawi. The volunteers and national staff have seen many faces and have been a light of Jesus to many people. Their work is one of humility, patience, commitment, and sacrifice for people that they may never see again. It is leaving a place of comfort and entering one that brings constant reminders of pain, disease, sorrow, and loneliness. Yet, it also brings the blessings of new friendships, lessons in perseverance and character, and a strengthened faith in the One who sustains, cares for, and loves each of us the same.

The Medical Mission is a program in which WELS or ELS health care professionals can use their God-given abilities to spread His love in a different area of the world. This ministry of love is a tremendous benefit to the Lutheran Church of Central Africa and our fellow sisters and brothers in Jesus.

Medical Clinic Spreads Gospel

Recently the students of Wisconsin Lutheran High School provided furnds to purchase medical and dental equipment to be used during free clinics that are a part of our mission outreach in Nepal. These clinics are held once every two months or at times less frequently. The clinics are supported by the Humanitarian Aid Committee. They serve as a bridge to bring the message of the gosple to the people of Nepal.

The most recent clinic was held in the Himalyan Mountain area. Over 500 patients were treated and 600 copies of the booklet “The Promise” were distributed along with about 40 copies of “Jesus the Christ,” a guided self-study book. There is one worship group in the area where the clinic was held.
